ブラックバーン校長先生の卒業式のスピーチ、よかったですねぇ～。
"My girls.
Grow old along with me.
The best is yet to be.
If some decades later
you look back on your time with us here
and you feel that these were the happiest days of your life,
then I must say your education will have been a failure.
Life must improve as it takes its course.
Your youth you spend in preparation
because the best things are never in the past,
but in the future.
I hope that you pursue life,
and hold onto your hope and your dream
until the very end of the journey."
最初の二行、
"Grow old along with me.
The best is yet to be."
は、Robert Browning の "Rabbi Ben Ezra"
という詩の最初の二行からの引用でした。
過ぎ去った時代を顧みて、あの時が一番幸せだった、というのなら、
自分たちの教育は失敗だったと言わざるをえない、
最上のものは過去にあるのではなく、未来にあるから。
人生という旅路が終りを迎えるまで、
人生を追求し、希望や理想を持ち続け、進んでいく人でいてください・・・
沁みますね・・・。
それから、
富山先生のかけた言葉も 印象的でした。
"Every woman is the architect of her own fortune."
このことわざは、もともと
"Every man is the architect of his own fortune."
（=Your own decisions and your own actions determine what your life will be like. 自分の決意と行動が、自分の人生を決める;
the architect of ---- で
----の立役者 という意味になるので）
となっているようですが、
富山先生は、manをwomanに変え、hisをherに変えて、
女性ということを強調したのでしょうね。
ブレない軸を持って、
命が終わる最後の瞬間まで、
過去よりも未来のほうがよりよくなると
決意し行動し続けることで
自分の人生を創りだしていくー。
深いところで うんうん・・・、と うなづく回でした。
